“What business do we need to discuss, love?”

MC sighed. “I primarily wanted to turn the tour guide business over to someone else. That being said, we both know we’re burning through the time available to get back to the Pinnacle system.”

Oleon laughed. “Ema’s side trip to acquire wildlife for the jungle was much more costly in terms of time than any of us anticipated. We were in cages on that damn circus ship for nearly four weeks. On the other hand, at least none of the remote sensor buoys have picked up incoming Uvaloothi.”

“No, not yet. Realistically, we probably have a couple of years yet. It’s just something we need to be aware of whenever we get involved with any side job.”

Oleon said, “Mantis, are you here?”

“Silly question, Captain. I’m always here.”

“Why did you decide to introduce Wilbin to cats?”

“Caught me, did you? Because I have MC’s impressions of meeting with the Trilift in their environment. Yours, too, but to a lesser degree. Her people are primarily land dwellers. I suspect nothing ever evolved on that planet that could be considered a pet. They appear to have an emotional need to care for something. To have creatures that appreciate that care. We have cats. I thought it would be beneficial to have them thinking about cats. I let Sandy loose in the area. Should I have asked permission?”

MC said, “No, honey. You’re the ship’s administrator. That means you get to make decisions without running them by either Oleon or me. I’m more than willing to ask Anders to ship a few hundred cats to Trilift, if the natives are interested. I have no objection to them having pets, as long as they’re not sentient pets.”

Oleon frowned. “I was going to wait until medical was done with them, but I think there is something wrong with the two so-called pets we brought over from the Trilift palace.”

Cocking up an eyebrow, MC asked, “Which is?”

“I’m going on telepathy, which I don’t entirely trust. We know the Trilift kept them drugged. To a large degree, they seem pleased to be taken care of by the Trilift. It disturbs me to be saying this, but I’m not sure that taking them out of that environment is going to be the best thing for them.”

“That’s a problem. I was thinking we would cut them loose when we stop at Ranenia Prime — leave them on the Mega Station with sufficient funds to get them home. As interesting as it might be, I’m sure we don’t have enough time to ferry them to where they’re each from individually.”

Oleon said, “Like you said, the Uvaloothi fleet should still be years out. Yes, we’ve lost over a month here, so far. If we’re taking some of the Trilift with us, we’ll probably lose another week. Maybe two or three. We can afford it, MC, as long as we’re not taking the pet population to their individual worlds. Or are you thinking of putting the Daphrin project on hold?”

“No, you’re right.
